Eardrum perforation healing process

Eardrum perforation healing process

Many parents always slap their children in the face when they beat them, which can cause perforation of the eardrum or even more serious damage, so parents should try to restrain themselves. The self-healing process of eardrum perforation is very long, and this is only applicable to patients with relatively mild diaphragm perforation. If the perforation is relatively large, it is best to choose surgical treatment, so the order depends on the size of the eardrum perforation.

1. The self-healing process of eardrum perforation

Usually, perforations are caused by too much pressure from a slap or by someone bumping into your ears while you're digging them. If the perforation is not large, it will usually heal on its own.

Take some anti-inflammatory drugs to prevent infection, and take measures to prevent water from entering the ear hole when taking a bath. If the perforation is relatively large and is caused by chronic otitis media, there is a possibility of calcification around the perforation and it will not heal on its own. You can also go to a larger hospital to have a tympanoplasty.

2. Time for the perforation of the eardrum to heal

Under normal circumstances, if there is no secondary infection, the perforation of the eardrum can heal itself in about one to three months. This process is a bit long, and patients need to pay attention to various details during this period, such as using ear drops every day as instructed by the doctor, and ensuring that they are waterproof and do not allow any liquid to enter the ears. This is the key to preventing ear infections. However, if the symptoms caused by the perforated eardrum do not disappear within three months, it proves that the damaged eardrum cannot heal itself. In this case, the patient must undergo more targeted treatment, namely eardrum repair surgery.

3. How big is a perforation in the eardrum?

There are two main causes of tympanic membrane perforation: traumatic tympanic membrane perforation and inflammatory tympanic membrane perforation. If it is a traumatic tympanic membrane perforation, if it is small, generally not exceeding 1/3, it can heal on its own; if it is an inflammatory tympanic membrane perforation, even if the tympanic membrane perforation is very small, due to inflammatory lesions in the middle ear mucosa, periosteum or deep bone, it is often combined with chronic mastoiditis. So surgery is also needed. You still need to go to the hospital for specific examination.
