Causes of high white blood cell count

Causes of high white blood cell count

White blood cells are a common type of blood cell in the human body. In addition to white blood cells, there are many red blood cells, platelets, neutrophils and some other types of cells. White blood cells are the most important type of blood cells in the blood. In addition to white blood cells, there are red blood cells, platelets and plasma. White blood cells mainly serve as a part of the immune system, helping the body resist infectious diseases and foreign bacterial invasions. The function of white blood cells is also relatively powerful.

When the body is seriously damaged or the white blood cells are damaged, the total number of white blood cells or the percentage of cells will be reduced to a certain extent. In addition to the white blood cells in the blood, they also exist in the lymphatic system and other body tissues. Abnormalities in white blood cells can lead to the occurrence of some diseases.

a. Hemoglobin (Hb): Normal males are 120-160 g/L, females are 110-150 g/L, and newborns are 170-200 g/L. * Increased: Polycythemia vera, severe dehydration, cor pulmonale, congenital heart disease, residents of high mountain areas, severe burns, shock, etc. Reduced: Anemia, bleeding*

b. Red blood cell (RBC) count: Normal males are 4-5.5 million/μL, females are 3.5-5 million/μL, and newborns are 6-7 million/μL; * Increased: polycythemia vera, severe dehydration, cor pulmonale, congenital heart disease, residents of high mountain areas, severe burns, shock, etc. Reduced: anemia, bleeding*

c. White blood cell (WBC) count: normal adults: 4000-10000/μL, newborns: 15000-20000/μL, infants from 6 months to 2 years: 11000-12000/μL. *Elevated: various cell infections, inflammations, severe burns. Leukemia should be excluded when significantly elevated. Decreased: leukopenia, hypersplenism, hematopoietic dysfunction, radiation, drugs, chemical toxins, etc. causing bone marrow suppression, malaria, typhoid, viral infections, paratyphoid. *Leukocytosis is common in inflammatory infections, bleeding, poisoning, leukemia, etc. Its reduction is common in viral infectious diseases such as influenza and measles, severe sepsis, drugs or radiation, and certain blood diseases.

The above are the reasons for leukocytosis. An increase in leukocytosis can lead to malignant diseases, so some functions of leukocytosis in the body are relatively critical. Routine blood tests will show that the leukocytosis is high. The high leukocytosis mainly causes some other types of diseases or polycythemia and some acute inflammations, severe anemia and malignant tumors. Therefore, if an abnormal increase in leukocytosis is found, it must be checked in time.
