The treatment steps of rational emotive therapy are:

1. Point out to the patients that their way of thinking and beliefs are irrational; help them figure out why it has become like this and how it has developed to the current state, and explain the relationship between irrational beliefs and their emotional distress. This step can directly or indirectly introduce the basic principles of ABC theory to the patient.

2. Point out to the patients that the reason their emotional distress continues to this day is not due to the influence of their early life, but is caused by their own irrational beliefs now, and they themselves should be responsible for this.

3. Through therapeutic techniques that mainly involve debating with irrational beliefs, we help patients recognize the irrationality of their beliefs, and then abandon these irrational beliefs, helping patients to produce a certain level of cognitive change. This is the most important part of treatment.

4. Not only should we help patients recognize and abandon certain specific irrational beliefs, but we should also start by changing their common irrational beliefs and help them learn to replace irrational thinking with rational thinking to avoid becoming victims of irrational beliefs again.

Once these four steps are completed, irrational beliefs and the emotional distress and disorders caused by them will be eliminated, and the patient will replace irrational thinking with more rational thinking, thus being less troubled by irrational beliefs. Throughout the process of rational emotive therapy, debating with irrational beliefs has always been the main way for therapists to help patients.
