Signs of lung consolidation (such as decreased breath sounds, dullness to percussion, bronchial breath sounds, and inspiratory crackles) as well as pleural friction rubs, pleural effusions, pulmonary edema, and pyopneumothorax (dullness to percussion, contralateral shift of the mediastinum, and decreased breath sounds at the site of the effusion) may be found. Urn-like breath sounds are rare. Patients with a longer course of the disease often have clubbing of the fingers, collapsed and deformed chest cage, and poor mobility. Examination of patients with pneumothorax and bronchopleural fistula may reveal corresponding physical signs.
