What is phlebitis?

Phlebitis mainly refers to inflammation of veins, also known as thrombophlebitis, which is very common in clinical practice. Many people do not know what phlebitis is. It is mainly caused by trauma that causes damage to the venous endothelium. Pain and redness and swelling of the affected limb are the main symptoms of phlebitis.

1. Environmental factors:

The cold and humid environment will make the warm air in the body easily condense in the veins. After catching cold, blood vessels will spasm, the vascular endothelium will be damaged, blood flow will slow, blood viscosity will increase, and coagulability will increase, leading to venous thrombosis.

2. High blood concentration:

Lower limb trauma, surgery, large area burns, pregnancy and postpartum period will increase the platelet count and release coagulation factors, which will change the blood composition and make it hypercoagulable, providing a breeding ground for the formation of phlebitis.

3. Long-term infusion:

Long-term catheterization for continuous infusion can cause direct damage to the venous wall, or damage the venous wall due to various mechanical impacts, resulting in inflammatory reactions.

4. Long squats:

It can cause poor blood flow, local ischemia, hypoxia, blood vessel damage, endothelial damage, increased intravenous pressure, and lead to venous thrombosis.

5. Others

Intravenous administration of highly irritating, high-concentration drugs or prolonged use can damage venous endothelial cells; superficial varicose veins, blood stasis; obesity, smoking, trauma causing venous endothelial damage; bacterial infection, etc. After the venous endothelium is damaged, a thrombus is formed, which quickly leads to an inflammatory reaction of the entire superficial vein wall, and even involves the tissues around the vein. There is exudate, and local manifestations include pain, swelling, and tender cord-like hard strips or beaded nodules, but no obvious systemic reaction.
