Symptoms of bone hyperplasia, joint pain is the most common

The incidence of bone hyperplasia increases with age. Some obese people are also prone to bone hyperplasia. Bone hyperplasia most often occurs in the knee joints, causing joint pain, joint stiffness, joint swelling, and even restricted movement.

1. Predisposing sites

Bone hyperplasia often occurs in weight-bearing joints, most commonly the knee and hip joints of the lower limbs, but also includes the interarticular joints of the spine, distal interphalangeal joints of the fingers, metatarsophalangeal joints, thumb carpometacarpal joints, mandibular joints, acromioclavicular joints, etc.

2. Joint pain. Bone hyperplasia often manifests as joint pain, which ranges from mild to severe. The pain is relieved after rest and worsens when bearing weight or exercising too much.

3. Joint stiffness

Joint stiffness caused by bone hyperplasia is a kind of elastic stiffness, which manifests as "difficulty in starting after sitting for a while", that is, it is difficult for the joint to start moving after being still for a long time. Stiffness in the fingers or large joints may seriously affect function, but unlike rheumatoid arthritis, the stiffness is not particularly obvious or lasting after waking up.

4. Joint swelling. Bone hyperplasia can thicken the bone ends and cause bony swelling of the joints. Occasionally, joint swelling may occur when the synovial membrane of the joints swells and exudates, and it often occurs in the knee or elbow joints.

5. Limited movement or deformity

When the symptoms of bone hyperplasia are mild, there is usually no movement disorder. When the symptoms worsen and inflammation occurs, the range of joint movement is often reduced, and fine or rough friction sounds may occur during movement. In severe cases, it may cause poor joint alignment and lead to deformities such as knee valgum.

6. In large joints affected by muscle atrophy and bone hyperplasia, muscles may atrophy and muscle tone decrease, but myopathy does not occur, which is different from rheumatoid disease.
