What are the signs of uremia?

In daily life, uremia is a relatively serious kidney disease. After uremia occurs, it will affect the kidneys to excrete waste from the body, causing the body to become increasingly thin and weak, thus leading to life-threatening. In the early stages of uremia, some physical symptoms will appear. If not discovered in time, it may become more serious.

Symptoms of uremia

Early symptoms: Anorexia and abdominal discomfort, followed by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, glossitis, oral ulcers, urine-smelling breath, headache, dizziness, confusion, apathy, drowsiness, lethargy, and even coma. High blood pressure, frequent arrhythmias, severe anemia, and deep and long breathing during acidosis. The skin is dull, dry and flaky. After urea is excreted from the sweat glands, it can condense into white urea frost, which can irritate the skin and cause severe itching.

Symptoms of uremia

The gastrointestinal symptoms of uremia appear earliest, including poor appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, an ammonia smell in the mouth, inflamed gums, ulcers and bleeding of the oral mucosa, etc. The nervous system may experience insomnia, irritability, numbness and burning pain in the limbs. In the late stage, there may be drowsiness and even convulsions and coma. The cardiovascular system may experience hypertension as well as precordial pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, abdominal distension and pain, edema, and inability to lie flat caused by pericarditis and heart failure. Anemia and mucosal bleeding may occur in the blood system. The respiratory system may present with cough and chest pain caused by pneumonia and pleurisy.

Symptoms of uremia can develop slowly and remain undetected for a long time. Acute renal failure can occur within a few days, with obvious symptoms of uremia. Uremic syndrome can be varied, and not all symptoms are necessarily present.

(I) Azotemia stage

The patient has obvious nitrogen retention, but clinically only has symptoms of primary kidney disease, or only headache, fatigue, poor appetite, etc.

(II) Uremia stage

1. General symptoms:

The face is pale and gray, the whole body is weak and thin.

2. Gastrointestinal manifestations:

It is the earliest and most prominent manifestation of this disease. Anorexia and abdominal discomfort may be followed by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, glossitis, oral ulcers, and urine odor in the breath. In the later stages, it may cause gastrointestinal bleeding with black stools and hematemesis.

3. Mental and nervous system manifestations:

Headache, dizziness, confusion, apathy, drowsiness, lethargy, and even coma. Restlessness, muscle tremors, twitching, and seizures are also common in the late stage.

4. Cardiovascular manifestations:

High blood pressure and arrhythmias are common; in the late stages, fibrinous pericarditis and heart failure may occur.

5. Hematopoietic manifestations:

Severe anemia may also cause bleeding symptoms in the late stage.

6. Respiratory system manifestations:

In acidosis, breathing is deep and long. In late stages, it can cause uremic bronchitis, pneumonia, and pleurisy.

7. Skin manifestations:

The skin is dull, dry and flaky. After urea is excreted from the sweat glands, it can condense into white urea frost, which can irritate the skin and cause severe itching.
