Tear duct obstruction

Tear duct obstruction

Tear duct obstruction may be caused by bacterial infection, which can cause the patient to experience excessive tears. If not treated properly, it will affect the patient's eye vision. The blockage of the tear duct may be caused by skeletal deformities due to congenital maldevelopment, and retinal or conjunctivitis may also cause blockage of the tear duct. It is recommended that patients should go to the hospital to check the cause and then receive treatment based on the cause.

Tear duct obstruction is a common and frequently occurring ophthalmic disease. It is a disease that often occurs in the lacrimal puncta, lacrimal canaliculi, the junction of the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct, and the lower opening of the nasolacrimal duct, with epiphora as the main symptom. If not treated thoroughly, there is a risk of latent intraocular and extraocular infection. The treatment principle is to control lacrimal sac inflammation and restore or establish the lacrimal sac to nasal drainage channel.

Causes

1. Congenital and developmental factors

Congenital Hasner valve obstruction is the most common, and there are also congenital lacrimal duct atresia (including bony nasolacrimal duct atresia caused by bone deformity), congenital absence of lacrimal puncta, and nasal septum deviation.

2. Inflammation

Local inflammation of the eye, such as trachoma, acute and chronic conjunctivitis, blepharitis, acute and chronic dacryocystitis, sty, eyelid herpes, etc. Inflammation of adjacent tissues, such as hypertrophic rhinitis.

3. Trauma

The most common cause is lacrimal duct laceration, and other causes include mechanical injury to other parts of the body, burns (heat or acid and alkali), and nasal and maxillary bone fractures involving the lacrimal duct.

4. Foreign matter

Dust, fallen eyelashes, etc.

5. Tumor

Lacrimal sac tumors, nose and paranasal sinus tumors, etc.

6. Iatrogenic injury

Surgery (nasal and paranasal sinus surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery), excessive or inappropriate tear duct irrigation, probing. Radiation injury caused by radiotherapy of local malignant tumors. Severe allergic reactions to drugs, such as reactions after vaccination.

7.The cause is unknown in some patients.
