Why is half of my toenail empty?

What happens when half of the toenail is empty? In fact, there is not a single reason. In addition to the onychomycosis that everyone is familiar with, if there is trauma or keratinization, shedding and psoriasis, the symptom of half nail emptiness will also appear. Therefore, we should recognize and understand these reasons from multiple aspects, so that we can deal with them correctly and reduce their impact.

1. Caused by trauma

Hollow toenails are probably caused by trauma. Many people may be hit by heavy objects or have their nails pinched when they are not paying attention. At this time, the toenails may have congestion inside the nails, the nail flesh may separate, and the nails may become hollow. If the nails become hollow due to trauma, you can slowly wait for the new nails to grow out and push out the bad nails. If the nails are too long, you can slowly try to trim them off until they are completely healed and fall off on their own.

2. Nail loss

Nail shedding means that the nail plate separates from the nail bed starting from the root of the nail and will fall off after it is completely separated. During the shedding process, the toenails may appear hollow. The causes of nail shedding include prolonged contact of nails with water, insufficient trace elements in the diet, chronic diseases, oral contraceptives, and polished nails.

3. Caused by psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is very prone to recurrence, and lesions can occur anywhere on the body. The nail disease caused by psoriasis is manifested as an uneven nail surface with small pits, and the nail plate may separate from the nail bed. So, hollow toenails may also be caused by psoriasis.

4. Onychomycosis

The first reason to consider when your toenails become hollow is onychomycosis, which is commonly known as onychomycosis and is a nail disease caused by fungal infection. It often manifests as discoloration, thickening, accumulation of dirt, or destruction or loss of the nail plate. The nails become hollow and contain white powder, which is a very obvious symptom of onychomycosis.
