What are the symptoms of brain concussion?

In daily life, there are many cases of concussions caused by head injuries. Many people are scared to death when they hear about concussions. In fact, concussions are not as scary as imagined. Concussion is just a temporary loss of consciousness after a blow to the head. You may wake up immediately, but you may also forget a lot of things. Concussion is very common in clinical practice. So what are the symptoms of concussion?

1. Headache and dizziness: They are obvious within a few days after the injury and gradually ease afterwards. Some patients feel that the symptoms are very severe. Headache and dizziness often last for a long time.

2. Disturbance of consciousness: Most cases are mild, with loss of consciousness or only transient confusion. Disturbance of consciousness can be as short as a few seconds or minutes, generally not exceeding 20 minutes, and can return to normal after consciousness is regained.

3. Amnesia: It often manifests as retrograde amnesia, that is, the injured person cannot remember the circumstances at the time of injury or the process of injury.

4. Nausea and vomiting: Most of them are mild and disappear within 1-2 days; in children, they are often more obvious and may even become the main symptoms.

5. Others: Symptoms of autonomic nervous system dysfunction may occur, manifested as emotional instability, irritability, impatience, inattention, tinnitus, palpitations, sweating, insomnia or nightmares, etc.

Generally speaking, if the doctor determines that there is no serious brain damage, the patient does not need treatment. However, all patients with brain trauma should be alert to further deterioration of symptoms, especially children. Parents of children with brain trauma should be advised to pay special attention to changes in their children's condition after injury. As long as the symptoms do not worsen, some analgesics can be given to treat the pain.

1. When the headache and dizziness are severe during the acute phase, you should rest for 7 to 14 days, avoid adverse stimulation, reduce mental burden, reduce mental activity, and do less thinking and reading.

2. The patient should be observed in the emergency room for a short period of time after the injury. Pay attention to changes in consciousness, pupils, and vital signs. If the patient's symptoms worsen while being observed at home, he or she should be followed up immediately.

3. Symptomatic treatment

1) Patients with irritability, anxiety, and insomnia can be given oral diazepam tablets or intramuscular injection of phenobarbital sodium. The dosage can be reduced as appropriate for elderly patients with liver and kidney dysfunction.

2) Give analgesics when headache occurs. If necessary, you can use diazepam, oryzanol, vitamin B6, nimodipine, and cefotaxime.

4. Psychological treatment: If the patient’s symptoms do not improve in the later stage, psychological counseling should be given.

Warm reminder: Patients should participate in recreational activities or do physical exercise appropriately, which can not only enhance their physical fitness, but also distract their attention from concussion and promote recovery from the disease. The most important thing is that concussion patients and their families should realize that concussion will not have any sequelae, so as to avoid increasing the psychological burden and causing unnecessary troubles.
