Menstruation is a normal physiological phenomenon for women and is regular. Although the menstrual period is not the same every month, it should be similar in color and amount. Is it normal to have heavy menstrual flow?

The normal menstrual blood volume for women is generally 50~80ml, with the heaviest bleeding on the 2nd to 3rd day of menstruation. If the daily blood loss is more than 80ml, or the menstrual volume is significantly increased compared to the past, a normal cycle is called heavy menstruation.

Reason 1: Uterine damage. This situation usually occurs after a woman gives birth or has an IUD inserted, which can cause excessive menstrual bleeding. Anovulatory menorrhagia during adolescence is a symptom of functional uterine bleeding.

Reason 2: Gynecological diseases. Uterine fibroids can cause women to have heavy menstrual periods. Even very small fibroids can cause heavy menstrual periods. Endometritis can also cause heavy menstrual bleeding in women.

Reason three: systemic disease. For example, blood diseases, liver diseases, hypertension, diabetes and other diseases can affect the secretion of estrogen, leading to increased vascular fragility, causing endometrial hyperplasia and thus increasing menstruation.

Reason 4: Other factors. Some women take hormone drugs or anticoagulant drugs, which can also cause excessive menstrual flow.

What to do if your menstrual flow is too heavy

1. To regulate emotions, you need to keep a good mood and avoid worry, depression and anger, which can damage the liver and spleen, or excessive emotions, which can turn the five emotions into fire and disturb the Chong and Ren meridians, causing menstrual diseases.

2. Adjust the temperature according to the changes in climate and environment, and add or reduce clothes and quilts appropriately. Avoid keeping the room too cold or too cold to avoid attracting external evil, damaging blood and qi, and causing menstrual diseases.

3. Proper work and rest. You should actively engage in labor (physical and mental labor), but avoid overwork and strenuous exercise. Excessive work can easily damage your temper, which can lead to menstrual diseases caused by dysfunction of control or biochemical deficiencies. Pay attention to your diet, which should be regular and quantitative.

4. Birth control and sexual abstinence should focus on birth control and sexual abstinence to prevent diseases, avoid excessive and frequent births (including abortions) and sexual intercourse during menstruation and after childbirth, otherwise it will damage the Chong and Ren meridians, essence and blood, and kidney Qi, leading to menstrual diseases. More attention should be paid to the above items in normal times, and more attention should be paid during menstruation and after childbirth, which can reduce or prevent the occurrence of this disease.

5. Avoid overeating or excessive consumption of fatty, greasy, raw, cold, spicy, and dry foods to avoid damaging the spleen and stomach and causing biochemical deficiencies, or accumulation of moisture to produce phlegm, or cooling or burning blood to cause menstrual disorders.
