Introduction to pituitary gland fullness

Some patients may think that the fullness of the pituitary gland is a brain tumor. In fact, this idea is wrong, because there is a certain difference between a full pituitary gland and a tumor. Moreover, the fullness of the pituitary gland is mainly caused by the swelling of the pituitary gland due to compression of the pituitary gland. Therefore, we recommend that patients should treat the fullness of the pituitary gland in time in their lives.

A full pituitary gland is not necessarily a pituitary tumor, but we should be alert to the possibility of a pituitary tumor. The main clinical manifestations of pituitary tumors are divided into four categories. The first category is some symptoms caused by the hormone-secreting tumor itself. For example, acromegaly will cause ugly face and thick fingers. If it happens to children, it is gigantism. If it is a prolactinoma, the patient will secrete milk after the increase of prolactin. ACTH tumors will cause relative obesity, and then thick fingerprints will grow on the skin and legs. It is mainly a manifestation of increased hormones.

Another major symptom is pituitary compression, including headaches caused by compression, or neurological or local compression headaches. Another is visual field loss, which means that you can't see recently. Many patients who come to the neurosurgery department will show hemianopsia, and some can't see. It's mainly caused by compression. The third is the decline in function after compression, because the pituitary secretes six hormones, and any decline in hormone function will show up, such as decreased libido and erectile dysfunction in men. Women have irregular menstruation, infertility, decreased thyroid function, and severe nausea and vomiting.

Generally, the pituitary gland volume shown by imaging examinations is between the upper limit of the normal volume threshold, that is, abnormalities in size and morphology. A full pituitary gland can be due to individual differences or it can be slightly enlarged due to various reasons. If it is the latter factor, further progression of the lesion will cause the pituitary gland to further enlarge and compress adjacent tissue structures. At the same time, since the pituitary gland is an endocrine gland, it often causes related endocrine system symptoms. Therefore, in your case, it is recommended that you undergo detailed endocrine examinations and MRI scans under the guidance of a doctor, based on the actual situation, to further understand or rule out certain diseases so that timely diagnosis and treatment can be carried out.
