Dietary Guidelines for Gout

Dietary Guidelines for Gout

For gout patients, daily diet is very important. If the diet is poor, it may easily induce gout. First of all, protein intake should be strictly limited. You should eat some skimmed milk powder appropriately, but don’t drink yogurt. There is more lactic acid in yogurt, which can easily cause adverse conditions for gout patients. In addition, try to eat less fish and meat. If you really want to eat meat, you can boil the meat and try not to drink the soup after eating meat. Eat more alkaline foods and less acidic foods.

1. Limit protein intake and choose more milk, cheese, skimmed milk powder and eggs, which contain less purine; but do not drink yogurt, because it contains more lactic acid, which is not good for gout patients. Try not to eat meat, poultry or fish. If you must eat them, boil the meat and discard the soup before eating. This is because purine is easily soluble in water and its content in soup is very high.

2. Eat more alkaline foods and less acidic foods . Gout patients have purine metabolism disorders and abnormal uric acid. If they eat too much acidic food, it will aggravate the condition and be detrimental to recovery. Eating more alkaline foods can help replenish potassium, sodium, and chloride ions and maintain acid-base balance.

3. Avoid drinking alcohol because alcohol contains purine, which is metabolized into uric acid in the body. In addition, the lactic acid produced by ethanol metabolism can inhibit the excretion of uric acid by the kidneys, thereby increasing blood uric acid and inducing gout.

4. Avoid foods high in purine. Foods high in purine include animal offal, fish, shrimp, clams, beef, mutton, and peas. Gout patients should try to eat less or no purine. Gout patients should eat more foods with low purine content, such as milk, eggs, bread, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc., to reduce the entry of exogenous purine into the body and lower blood uric acid levels.

5. Control your total daily energy intake and eat less carbohydrates. In addition, eat less sucrose and honey because they are high in fructose and will accelerate the production of uric acid. Among vegetables, young lentils, green beans, and fresh peas contain high levels of purine, so their consumption should also be limited.
