What causes the tongue to become larger?

The reason why we can taste so many flavors is largely due to our tongue. There are more than 10,000 taste buds on our tongue. The tongue works silently for us and generally no problems arise. In traditional Chinese medicine, the basis of diagnosing illnesses is to observe changes in the shape and color of the tongue, which means that changes in the body will be reflected in the tongue. When your tongue becomes larger, the first thing you should consider is whether you have bitten it, causing bleeding and swelling. If not, you can refer to Chinese medicine's tongue diagnosis to see why the tongue has become larger.

TCM diagnosis: Swollen tongue is an enlarged tongue with tooth marks on the edges, which is called tongue hypertrophy. Severe enlargement is called swelling, with the tongue filling the mouth and having difficulty in turning, and in severe cases it can affect breathing and speech. According to traditional Chinese medicine, a fat tongue indicates qi deficiency or dampness; a fat tongue with a greasy coating is mostly due to phlegm dampness or damp-heat. A bright red and swollen tongue often indicates heat in the heart and stomach; a purple and swollen tongue is mostly due to alcohol toxicity; if the tongue is swollen and the lips are also swollen and purple, it is blood stasis, often caused by drug poisoning or food poisoning. Modern medicine believes that tongue swelling is mainly related to connective tissue hyperplasia, tissue edema, or vascular and lymphatic reflux disorders of the tongue. It is clinically more common in patients with hypothyroidism, acromegaly, chronic nephritis and uremia, as well as acute poisoning. Some patients may have swollen tongue due to compression of the pharynx or neck, such as severe laryngeal edema or extremely enlarged thyroid gland.
