How to treat trachoma

1. Medication

Chlamydia trachomatis is sensitive to tetracyclines, macrolides and fluoroquinol antibiotics. Topical application of 0.1% rifampicin or 15% sodium sulfacetamide eye drops, and tetracycline ointment or erythromycin ointment at night. Acute or severe trachoma should be treated with systemic antibiotics, such as doxycycline or erythromycin, taken orally.

2. Surgery

Used for ocular complications such as severe entropion, purulent lymphadenitis caused by lymphogranuloma venereum, elephantiasis, etc.

Trachoma symptoms:

1. Acute trachoma

Symptoms of acute follicular conjunctivitis are present, with red and swollen eyelids and highly congested conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is rough and uneven due to papillary hyperplasia, and the conjunctiva of the upper and lower domes is covered with follicles. There is also diffuse corneal epitheliitis and preauricular lymphadenopathy. It may turn into a chronic stage after a few weeks.

2. Chronic trachoma

Due to repeated infections, the course of the disease may last for several years to more than ten years. The degree of congestion will be reduced, and there will be papillary hyperplasia and follicle formation. The follicles vary in size and may appear colloid. The conjunctiva above the lesions and the upper edge of the tarsal plate are prominent. The same lesions are also seen in the conjunctiva of the lower eyelid and the lower fornix. In severe cases, they may even invade the semilunar folds.

After understanding how to treat trachoma, if you do not want to have the chance of getting trachoma, you must pay attention to daily prevention, especially when there are trachoma patients around you, be sure not to use the same towel with them, and pay attention to eye hygiene in daily life, do not rub your eyes with your hands, and avoid trachoma infection.
