Things to note the day before glucose tolerance test

Glucose tolerance is a relatively common examination method. Through such a test, the patient's current physical stage and current state can be determined, and there will be a clear understanding. In terms of diet, attention should be paid to controlling diet first. Rest for a while the day before, do not take a large amount of powdered sugar, and the patient should not eat anything within ten hours before the test. The test can be done without eating breakfast after waking up from sleep.

Glucose tolerance test precautions

When conducting clinical diagnostic tests for diabetes, fasting venous blood sugar is usually measured. When the fasting venous blood glucose is less than 5.0mmol/L, diabetes can be ruled out; when the fasting venous blood glucose is greater than 7.0mmol/L and there are clinical symptoms, diabetes can be diagnosed; and when the fasting venous blood glucose is between 5.5 and 7.0mmol/L and diabetes is suspected, a further glucose tolerance test—OGTT—should be performed. The OGTT test is an oral glucose load test used to understand the body's ability to regulate blood sugar after ingesting glucose. The OGTT test can detect abnormal glucose metabolism and diagnose diabetes at an early stage. Next, let’s take a look at what we should pay attention to!

1. Three days before the OGTT test, you should control your diet, the carbohydrate content in your daily diet should not be less than 150 grams, and maintain normal activities.

2. Drugs that affect this test (drugs that cause blood sugar to increase or decrease) should be discontinued.

3. The patient should not eat for 10 to 14 hours before the test.

4. On the morning of the test, fasting venous blood is drawn and the patient is asked to drink 300 ml of sugar water containing 75 grams of glucose within 5 minutes. Venous blood is drawn once 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 2 hours after drinking the sugar water, and urine is collected for qualitative test of urine sugar. During the entire test, you are not allowed to smoke, drink coffee, tea or eat, and you should sit quietly in a chair.
